Iolani Palace Repairs
ʻIolani Palace stands as one of Hawaiʻi’s most important historic landmarks and a lasting symbol of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Surrounding the palace is a distinctive ironwork fence and masonry wall originally installed in the late 1800s, when the coral block perimeter wall was lowered and topped with decorative iron fencing to reflect Hawaiʻi’s emergence as a modern nation.
By 2015, much of the historic perimeter—spanning approximately 2,800 linear feet of ironwork fencing and gates—had deteriorated and required extensive restoration. Kaikor Construction Group was selected to complete the improvements project, which included carefully dismantling sections of the fence and gates for sandblasting, hot-dip galvanizing, priming, and repainting before reinstallation.
The project also involved repairing and replastering the masonry wall caps, restoring the Royal Tomb brick wall, and refurbishing the royal coat of arms mounted on the vehicular gates.
In recognition of the quality and sensitivity of the restoration work, the project received an Award of Honor from the Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation for historic preservation at ʻIolani Palace.
Additional work included repairing and replastering the masonry wall caps to address cracks and damage, restoring the brick wall at the Royal Tomb by resetting and replacing loose or missing bricks, and refurbishing the royal coat of arms mounted on each vehicular gate.
Upon completion, the project received an Award of Honor from the Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation for the historic preservation of the palace’s perimeter ironwork fences, gates, and Royal Tomb..
